Agate marbles, made of chalcedony, were hand cut in Germany since at least 1775. They are typically banded in white or reddish brown rings. This reddish brown ("carnelian") or blue color was purposely made by heat and dyes. Under bright light one can typically see facets on the surface of a hand cut agate marble. "Aggies" were prized as shooters and cost many times more than "glassies".
